Facebook pushes mobile ads, distancing itself from Zynga

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, emphasized on a conference call Tuesday that the company can make significant revenue with advertising on smartphones and tablets.

Facebook is no longer the company that just wanted to connect the world and didn?t worry too much about making money.

Advertising and other revenue-making opportunities were front and center in an earnings conference call with the company?s executives Tuesday. And CEO Mark Zuckerberg, COO Sheryl Sandberg and CFO David Ebersman pushed mobile as the future of the company?s ad experience.

Zuckerberg said the company had 600 million mobile users this quarter, up from 376 million the year before. Six months after ramping up the company?s mobile ad offerings, the company reported 14 percent of its quarterly revenue, or about $150 million, came from mobile.

People using Facebook on mobile devices are more engaged, and Zuckerberg said he expects to ultimately see the company make more money from mobile than from desktop ads.

?This isn?t proven yet, but we?re committed to get there,? he said.

Mobile ads will be ?more like TV,? he said, describing them as ?high-quality and integrated into the experience, rather than off to the side.?

Zuckerberg also acknowledged during the call that gaming on Facebook ?isn?t doing as well as I?d like.? He especially tried to distance Facebook from Zynga, which has seen its stock price plummet in recent months and announced Tuesday it will lay off 5 percent of its workforce.

Payments from Zynga to Facebook decreased by 20 percent this quarter, but the rest of the gaming ecosystem has been growing. Zynga made up 7 percent of Facebook?s overall revenue in the third quarter, down from 10 percent in the second quarter and 12 percent in the third quarter of 2011.
